Lava Tubes in California's Mojave National Preserve

 

The Lava Tubes in the Mojave Desert south of Baker, CA are impressive.  In order to experience them, first you must descend into an open chamber via a ladder.  The light streaming in from different angles, depending on the time of day, is dramatic.

Along the Mojave Road: A desert tortoise

 

By the side of the Mojave Road, an easy offroad trail that runs through the heart of the Mojave Desert, I came across this desert tortoise.  I love the expression of determination on his (or her) face!  You should keep your distance when you encounter a desert tortoise in the wild and avoid scaring him.  Never remove a desert tortoise from his natural habitat.  Watch out for desert tortoises when driving, and enjoy them at a distance with your telephoto lens!
