After discovering Desert Lilies in Anza-Borrego State Park, I found out about the Desert Lily Sanctuary which is managed by the California Bureau of Land Management, and located along Highway 177, 8 miles north of Interstate 10 at the Desert Center exit. This preserve was founded in 1968 by Tasker and Beula Edmiston who together first saw these flowers in 1957 on Easter Sunday. The Desert Lily bulbs lie 18-24 inches underground and will often wait for many years for the right conditions to bloom. Rare, remote and special!
