On top of Mount Palomar is the Palomar Observatory, managed by California Institute of Technology. The Hale Telescope, built in 1908, and once the world's largest, it is still a center of astronomical research.

Lake Henshaw is located along Highway 76, near where it intersects with Highway 79, and it borders on the Cleveland National Forest.

The Ortega Highway (74) is a scenic mountain route that connects San Juan Capistrano, CA to Lake Elsinore, CA. We have had a rainy winter, so the hills, which are normally brown are currently a fluorescent green. This drive is a great half-day trip for southern California residents.
A great mix of California flora.
Much of the drive is through the Cleveland National Forest.

Unlike most cities, a great Ariel view of Lake Elsinore, CA is easily accessible from the Ortega Highway.
